Summary

Countryside was appointed by Walker Construction to design and install a new retaining wall in order to increase the usable garden space for the resident. The existing ground levels presented a significant embankment, which required a robust retaining solution to ensure long-term stability and safety.

The works commenced with the removal of existing vegetation, followed by careful excavation of the embankment to formation level. Due to the height and loading requirements of the retaining structure, post holes were augered to a depth of 4 metres to provide sufficient retaining strength. RSJ steel posts were then installed and securely set in C40 concrete to form the primary structural support.

The retaining wall was constructed using a combination of wood-effect and smooth concrete gravel boards, selected to provide both durability and an attractive finished appearance. A filter drain was installed behind the wall to manage groundwater and reduce hydrostatic pressure, with backfilling and compaction carried out in layers to ensure structural integrity.

Final works included levelling of the soil to create a larger, safe, and usable garden area for the resident. All works were carried out under a road closure, requiring careful planning and coordination to maintain safety and minimise disruption.

The project was delivered within a 6-week programme and completed to the client’s satisfaction, providing a high-quality retaining solution that significantly improved the functionality of the property.
